WHO WE ARE

Outside of the LGBTQIA community and want to support CRUX? Your financial and volunteer support go a long way towards CRUX's advocacy for LGBTQIA access to the sport. This allows us to hold safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQIA participants at our events. Email info@climbcrux.org to get involved!
TRIP OVERVIEW
Hanging Mountain is a recently opened cliff in Southern Massachusetts, the first cliff purchased by climbers in Southern New England. This approximately 1000-foot-long series of southeast facing cliffs, ranging from approximately 60 to 240 feet in height, contains granite, granitic gneiss, and large pockets of friable schist. It is mostly single pitch sport and trad climbing. It’s a great place for getting more comfortable with sport climbing or pushing your limits, since it was recently developed it’s very well bolted. The approach is a moderate 10 minute hike from the parking lot.
If you want to read more about Hanging Mountain there’s a website from the organization that manages it and an online guidebook.
WHAT GRADES SHOULD I EXPECT?
Routes at Hanging Mountain range from 5.7 to 5.12+. It is a mix of sport climbing and trad, though the trip will focus on sport climbing. There’s a simple guidebook if you want a preview. You will need to be certified to lead belay at a gym in order to join for this trip. You won’t be expected to lead every route, but there may be a bit more of a wait to climb if you want to top rope.
WHAT TO BRING
You will need a helmet, a harness, and rock shoes. If you own a personal anchor, a rope, carabiners, or cordelette, please bring those things, too! Helmets are required at all CRUX outdoor trips, especially for a newer crag like Hanging Mountain. Bring food and water for a full day of climbing, there is no water at the crag.
TRANSPORTATION
You will receive a link to the rideshare spreadsheet within 48 hours of signing up for the trip. We’ll leave the city at 7:30am.
COST
There is no fee to join us on this day trip! You are responsible for the cost of transportation, there is also a suggested donation of $5 to the Western Mass Climbing Coalition that manages the land.
